Dr Jason Hockman Reader in Music and Sound Design

Dr Jason Hockman

I am a Reader in Music and Sound Design at the School of Digital Arts (SODA) at Manchester Metropolitan University, where I focus on computational analysis and generation of audio for music production.

I am a music information retrieval researcher, a professional music producer and performer (Jason oS, DAAT), and co-founder of Detuned Transmissions, an artist collaborative and independent record label with international distribution (https://detunedtransmissions.com).

Over the course of my career, I have actively sought out synergies between my music production workflow and academic research, and subsequently embedded this holistic perspective into my teaching and undergraduate/postgraduate supervision activities. My main areas of research centre on ethnographies of breakbeat-orientated UK dance music and computational analysis/generation of audio for music production.

My interests have led me to investigate and publish on a diverse set of topics, including neural audio synthesis, music transcription, digital musicology, rhythm and metre analysis, interactive and performance music systems, and best practices for recording and archival. I have served as General Chair for major international audio conferences (Digital Audio Effects 2019) and disseminated my research and musical output through over 50 academic publications (IEEE, ISMIR, ACM), as well as through respected popular culture platforms (Ableton Loop, Strange Loop, Mixmag) and radio play (BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, NTS, Rinse FM).
